2018 woohoo!

Back after the disappointing IPL, and now for the IPLesque FIFA world cup 2018. I never thought I would say such things about football's greatest stage, but money rules today. The bracket now looks like this.

Teams struggling (or very much in form) should go through, rest should go home.
So, in case 1: France, Croatia, Brazil and England should win their respective matches, further France should beat Croatia to the semis and similarly England should beat Brazil, France becoming the champions.
In case 2: Uruguay, Croatia, Belgium and England to the quarters, with Uruguay beating Croatia, and England exacting revenge with Belgium for semis, and Uruguay gaining their 3rd world cup.

Or I am going insane, this shit of a world cup!!

13-4-18 RCB v KXIP

So the prophecy indeed turned out to be true, although it was not a nice way to make it happen. CSK won the toss and elected to chase. Narine came on as opener, scored 2 sixes in 4 balls, then went out to Harbhajan Singh. Uthhapa, Karthik, Rana all who were in feature in the previous game, none could get up to the thirty run mark. Harbhajan bowled 2 overs in the first six, and Dhoni decided it was over for him for that day, although he had just conceded 11 runs in those two overs and a wicket as well. Bravo was also bowling unusually poor, but still KKR were not threatening CSK with rapid attacks, until Russel came on. Even at the end of the 14th over the score was just 108/5. Then Russel started like a mad man scoring six here and there off Shardul Thakur, and mainly Bravo. Explosives in Tahir's over was still far-fetched.  But at the end of the innings, Russel and KKR finished with 88* and 202/6 respectively. So this turned out to be a high scoring game, since CSK were chasing, and KKR have a pretty good batting side. Watson and Rayudu started CSK innings in a good tone. As the match continued, Watson and Rayudu had cemented CSK's position by scoring boundaries in every odd ball. The game had shown me that no Indian batsman would win this game for CSK, since Sam Billings was batting at no. 5, after Dhoni, I had a feeling that today also was not dhoni's day. After a 28-ball twenty-five, with strike rate of below 100, Dhoni got out making way for Billings to explore and explode. Although he got out before the last over, Billing's 56 off 23 helped CSK to track down that huge total. And guess who bowled the last over, none other that Mr. Vinay Kumar, who had just bowled one over and conceded 16. 17 was required from the last over, pretty tough task right? At this point, I had begun questioning the results I had proposed. But I had also forgotten that there is a thing called no-ball in cricket, which can change any bloody game. The first ball of the last over went for a six, and also was a no-ball so a consequent free-hit as well. Do you see the magic? Now ones and twos till the last ball when a sixer was required. Jadeja had scored 5 runs in 6 balls prior to this ball, and was seeming to be struggling in all those six balls. But suddenly out of nowhere, he slapped the ball sweetly straight down the ground for a huge six. Cheers CSK!

The next game was a bit confusing than the previous one, because both RR and DD have not cemented their final places in my mind. I'm pretty sure that DD will finish in the top half, but the same may not be true for RR (or may be true, if they win all their latter games to comeback in the table, like MI had done on previous seasons). So for DD to get up in the table, they'll have to lose this match (and win latter matches consecutively). Since RR had lost an easy game last time, the betters would have a hard time selecting one team. DD won the toss and elected to field first, which increased the chance of DD winning, because till this point, all the chasers have won the game. Also D Short fell on the first over as well (to increase DD bid), which further supported the hypothesis. Rahane stayed till he was required and expected. Stokes scored a six and four, but nothing more. Now was the time to increase the final score. Samson and Buttler were scoring very freely. But Nadeem, today's new home-boy (so the dark horse) came and took the wicket of Samson; Buttler aslo got out little later, making way for Rahul Tripathi and Gowtham to flourish in their day. But this was not to be, because just then rainfall started, and the match was delayed to the point that the target was reduced to 71 from 6 overs by D/L method. Although Maxwell (new foreigner) opened the innings with a good note, couldn't hold on tho the start. Although Morris tried to provide the final spark, he couldn't pull DD through, hence they finished at 60/4, and lost the game to RR.

So for today's game, Gayle should play, in my opinion. I also think that this also might just be the final match pair as well. If this is to happen, it's most likely for KXIP to win this time. So for RCB to win then, they'll have to lose today. If Gayle plays, and KXIP bat in the first innings, they are almost sure to win according to me. And this should be the only loss for RCB for this week, although its a huge thing to predict.

10-4-18 CSK v KKR

I have a story to tell today. Consider a coin that has a head on both sides, and you choose to call tails, and hope if you stick to calling tails, you should be correct 50% of the time, imagine your frustration if you had put a lot of money in that result. Pretty hectic. Because we treat money as god, we frustrate, but if we just see money as the entry fee for that first bungee jump, we are free to scream and dream.

"All the players (usually batsmen) that have spiked the excitement last time around, have played surprisingly stupidly shit, unless he's home-born. Use of DeMorgan's Law in this statement also reveals truth." This has applied for the first four games, the exception being DJ Bravo, the champion. First Colin Munro, the moment he came to pitch he wanted to go back. In three balls he abysmally attempted to reverse sweep Mujeeb Ur and got out lbw on the last try. Gambhir, the home-born skipper, did his job. Shreyas Iyer, good last year and on recent tours, out on 11. Deliberately finished on an aggressive note (to attract more bids). "Those who seem to play agressively well(rarely poor) are doomed to defeat." Ashwin and Patel were thrashed in their respective first over, and the latter continued this feat in all of his 3 overs.

The next innings started explosively where Lokesh Rahul broke Sunil Narine's record of fastest fifty in IPL of 15 balls which was set just last year. Trent Boult who is very much in form, a foreigner and also played well last time, conceded 16 runs in the first over which pretty much started the damage. At 52 runs, Lokesh had scored 51 of them! But Chris Morris sent home Mayank Agrawal early to show some fake spark. Nair came on , scored a fifty, got out by Christian who I thought was the supposed game changer. At this time too DD could win the game. Then Miller and Stoinis finished the game with ease. Just like a typical IPL game.

                                                          XXX

About the second game. I had just lost 500 rupees, so had to bet on the second game as well. Both KKR and RCB had pretty good teams on paper so twas hard to settle on one. Even this game had an exception; you may think how come McCullum and de Villiers scored like past times. This is because either McCullum is clean or and the more probable one that he had to increase the bids rapidly for his doomed team. QDK (good performer & foreigner) had no role there, he got out early. Vinay kumar got dealt with by McCullum(wait for it). Kohli had no need to hold on so much that his final strike rate would be below 100. AB did his usual job because Kohi was doing this unusual thing. So the board kept on ticking. Kohli and AB were both done for by Nitish Rana, back to back. Remember Nitish Rana from his RPS days. Then for spark's sake, Mandeep Singh, a non performer (he's a player to watch), started to score boundaries here and there. Keeping all these things in mind, and the session score of 176 just before Mandeep's explosives, I decided to bet on 176 being the 1st innings score. And amazingly, Vinay Kumar again got two wickets in that over to restrict RCB exactly at 176!

Up came Sunil Narine and his partner in crime, Chris Lynn. The carribean guys get a freebie in IPL it seems. Lynn, fulfilling the prophesy, got out early, caught by de Viliers. Robin Uthappa, a good performer and home-born came on a situation when Narine had already done enough damage for that moment. So he too got out early. Rana came on and utilized his day, scored a quick 35 and got out by Washington Sundar, uncapped player doing their things. Since Uthappa had gone, it was upto the skipper, Karthik to handle the rather easy situation. But the game was about to get nervy until Russel pushed the game beyond doubt by scoring two 4s and a six. At last an easy win for KKR.

So today without any fuss CSK should win if(or no if?) they chase.

8-4-18 KXIP v DD

Well what can I say about yesterday? Who knew a retired hurt batsman comes on at no. 11, bats with a stiff leg for the first three balls of the last over, suddenly bends and scooped behind for a six and finishes the game, when, at one time, the required rate was 12 with 3 wickets in hand for CSK? DJ Bravo... Champion.

A good team on paper for DD means a good journey for them. No Gayle no party for punjab. So an easy win for DD.

New season, new magic

श्री गणेशाय: नम:॥  ॐ पद्मे हुँ॥

The journey has started. Another round of capable unsold players including Dale Steyn!! Gayle was initially unpicked but punjab got the hold of him at the end. Really this IPL bidding is a child's game, because a child can shock with his/her answer for which you were expecting an alternate obvious response. Meanwhile, Gayle was raging up in the BigBash when the auction was going on, just like back in 2012 season when he was left unsold while he scored 37 runs in an over in the BigBash. Sandeep Lamichhane, you have shown the strength and courage to reach the new heights you are on today. You and Rashid Khan will have a hell of a fight this season, I hope. Delhi, unlike past two-three seasons, have done well to bag Maxwell and Gambhir the lucky charm and to retain Morris and Rabada, but Delhi being Delhi have let go of two key players: QDK and Tahir. But this offload may make room for a more balanced team.

CSK and RR have returned in the midst of a forgettable (but not forgivable) incident which included two IPL team skippers: Steven Smith(RR) and David Warner(SRH). Both of them were involved in a recent ball tampering disgrace while playing Test against South Africa. Both have recieved a year ban from any cricketing activities, including IPL, which will be heavy losses for both of the teams. CSK have collected back almost all of its past players making an identical team with CSK2k16. Pune and Gujrat lions have been dismantled.

So about the first match, what can I say...in the last 5 IPL openers victories have gone to the defending champions, the only exception being at the time when Rising Pune were first introduced. The last time CSK-MI opener took place back in 2012, MI had crushed CSK by sending them packing for just 115 runs and finishing the game with 8 wickets in hand. Moreover, MI have triumphed over CSK more no. of times comparatively. This may be the only reason if CSK should win today (also Faf not playing due to injury).

Anyways, CSK will put a decent fight but it won't be a good comeback for them.

What a season, what a final

Indeed I can't say with guarantee that this tourney is fixed, but the reverse is also true. 11 off the last over, 4 off the first ball, still Pune lose. A mere 130 target, and Steven Smith chose that day to score a half century off half century of balls. See the final timeline: Mumbai wins toss and choses to bat(whaat!!), struggles at 79 for 7, still manages to stretch the required run rate in the first RPS over in decimals from 6, and Pune shockingly succumb to one run defeat! I really thought at the beginning that MI would come back to the final after being beaten by RPS in the qualifier-1, but the resurgent SRH should have entered to the final. But even SRH lost to KKR, and KKR lost to MI both in controversial fashions. But today I sincerely bow down to them bookies, hail you guys. Even I couldn't think of this epic final, why give chance to GL-RPS who are goners next season.

So the quote of the season (and almost every season) is:
"When you think its done, bring out your biggest gun
When the momentum seem to be over, that is your four-leaved clover"

Goodbye. See you in a year's time.

The Wait Is Over

Now the fun part. IPL has been scary like a hungry snake this season. But the old school finish is bound to happen. RPS should win the first tie; first due to it finishing second, and I could not find a second base. But the thing is this: everyone qualified, except Pune, have won the IPL. If MI is being presented as CSK in their days, they may as well win the second tie, qualifier-2. But usually a resurgent team reaches the final, and also because KKR has been shown good with bat this season, SRH should win their first tie, the qualifier-1. Finally, like last year where although GL didn't win the trophy they finished 1st in the league, this year, the final year for GL and RPS both, will end in a victorious tone for Pune. The wait is over.

Addition: I just found a second reason for Mumbai's today's loss, venue being Wankhede.
